This Labor Day week brings good and bad news for the construction industry as two new reports show both growth of the industry and a lack of skilled workers needed to fill positions and complete projects.

As the U.S. added 177,000 new jobs in August, the construction industry added 22,000 jobs, according to a U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS) August Employment Situation report released Sept. 1. Inflation and interest rates, two factors that directly impact the construction industry, remain high. But government money from the infrastructure act is helping the construction industry grow and keep the demand for skilled workers high. Meanwhile, a severe workforce shortage is impacting construction projects across the country.

The new machine which made its public debut as a prototype at Bauma last October, is structurally similar to the standard diesel powered TH412, offering a maximum lift height of 4.3 metres, with maximum capacity of 1,250kg which it can handle at full height, and a maximum forward reach of 2.25 metres with a 530kg load.

The U.S. Department of Labor Occupational Health and Safety Administration has proposed a revision to the federal regulations for personal protective equipment in the construction industry.

The revised rule would explicitly state that PPE must properly fit each employee, similar to requirements already in place in OSHA's general industry and maritime standards. Currently, the construction standard states that PPE “shall be provided, used, and maintained in a sanitary and reliable condition whenever it is necessary by reasons of hazards.”

Everyone is at risk when crane safety fails. Your workers are on the front line where injuries (and sometimes fatalities) can happen. Pedestrians in more populated areas are susceptible to injury. Your equipment is at risk and so is your business. How do you respond to accidents or work to prevent them when everything is on the line? 

Crane operators 

Crane operators are often the very first people to be held responsible for accidents – and operators certainly can be held responsible – but there are also people “below the hook” who had to do a lot of work before the operator even clocked in for their shift.
