Heightened Awareness: Rep. Espaillat suggests national modernization of crane and derrick safety standards
Rep. Adriano Espaillat (NY-13) urged OSHA to modernize crane and derrick safety standards earlier this month. In a letter signed by five other members of Congress including Rep. Nydia Velázquez (NY-7), the representative argued the Department of Labor’s recent, updated standards on the issue didn’t reflect the age of advanced technology available.
These researchers want to put “Fitbits” on urban trees to see when and how they grow
Low-cost technologies could help researchers and city managers pinpoint the precise timing of key tree activities, like blooming or changing leaves. This could offer important information about tree health, which in turn could help us offer some much-needed protection to these trees.
Implement These Nine Safety Audits to Improve Your Organization
Often, taking a closer look at how a given crew works and operates according to safety best practices and procedures is prompted by an accidental injury or even death. Beyond the human cost, the tree crew and the organization that has contracted them for work are both suddenly under significant pressure. Accidents may result in OSHA penalties, higher insurance rates, workers’ compensation claims, and more.

Shiga lab develops robots to perform dangerous tasks
The Japan News
The Yomiuri Shimbun Kanaoka Hakase, president of Man-Machine Synergy Effectors, Inc, stands by an industrial robot under development in Kusatsu, Shiga Prefecture.
August 8, 2022
TOKYO – A Shiga Prefecture laboratory is developing a potentially life-saving industrial robot that allows its operator, via virtual reality, to grasp and lift heavy objects as if using their own hands.
The robot, which weighs about 450 kilograms, could be attached to a crane to work in high places, including carrying out inspections and maintenance of railway overhead wires. The virtual reality gear worn by the operator provides a robot’s-eye view, in addition to force feedback to give the operator a sense of what is being lifted.
Under the radar: Technology lets arborists examine trunks, roots without damaging trees
Some of the wonders of modern medicine are technologies that enable doctors to look inside us without surgery. Now, the same principles are being applied to trees, which may end up benefiting some of the most beloved foliage in Baton Rouge — LSU’s live oaks.
